Aboard Oltu’s destroyer, Jaden pulled up his tunic and checked the recent wound decorating his belly. Luckily, Oltu’s sword had not cut deep and Jaden had pinched the edges of the cut then watched with amazement as his skin seemed to stick together. Thirty minutes later new pink skin sealed the wound. Doc’s nanos accelerated the healing process with amazing results.

His lips curled into a snarl of a smile. At least he’d got in one good attack. Oltu hobbled away from that fight.

Ardant studied Jaden while they waited for Bea to emerge out of the Tri’s hyperdrive. “You barely look human.” The Qui put out an arm and the muscles in his human arm visibly hardened. “Your strength rivals our own.”

“Sonil retains much of her Qui in human form. Your shift conforms more to human standards,” Jaden said.

“I can alter the parameters of my shift as I demonstrated, but I choose a more human guise for Bea. She still struggles with her past, with the abuses she suffered from the Surashan. I do what I must to keep her comfortable in my presence.”

Jaden gestured to the nose of the hull. He set Ardant up for an arm wrestle. “In your normal human form first.”

Jaden slammed Ardant’s hand against the hull and the human-looking Qui grinned. His muscles rippled and Ardant’s whole body hardened. They tried again and this time they were more evenly matched. Their bonded fists trembled back and forth across an arc.

“Skal. No wonder Oltu struggled against you today,” Ardant growled. He reverted to full-on lizard and Jaden’s strength yielded under a sudden push of Qui might. “Oltu trusts your loyalties to the Qui. He would not allow these nanos otherwise.” The Qui looked thoughtful, but then his expression changed and he suddenly shifted back to human form before turning around.

Bea stood watching them with an amused expression on her face.

“If you boys have finished playing...”

Jaden straightened. “We’re done.”

He watched Ardant frown as he considered a new problem. Jaden couldn’t hide what he’d become – the hard, angular ridges of his body betrayed the inhuman strength at his command. By the look on Ardant’s face, the Qui understood the ramifications if Doc’s nanos became approved use across the United Regions’ Forces.

The Qui needn’t worry. An army of super soldiers was still no match for a Qui destroyer.

The K’lahn could have eradicated humanity from the face of the Earth at any time during the thirty year war but their orders had been to invade and conquer, to subjugate, and they had not overstepped their authority.

The Qui feared the Surashan Empire, not Earth, and spent an Imperial fortune defending the Trexan border. If not for Sonil ascending the Qui throne, the K’lahn would have stomped on Earth to focus on the real threat. Concentrated on one planet, humans were too vulnerable. Humanity needed to escape the confines of Earth and spread across the stars.

Human’s adaptive capacity and rapid breeding could potentially overtake an alien environment within generations. Jaden grinned at the thought.
